    The FMS Cookie Dough Fundraiser will run from September 13-27, 2018. Students and their families are responsible for collecting orders and the money, and turning those in. Students are also responsible for delivering the cookie dough within 2 days of receiving it (and keeping it refrigerated until delivery). Failure to do so will result in families/students being responsible for customer reimbursement. If you do not want your student to participate, please contact Mrs. Johansen by September 12, 2018.

    From the Principal's Desk

    Dear Parents/Guardians/Students:

    I’m excited to welcome you to the 2018-2019 school year at Fortuna Middle School. I hope that you had a wonderful summer and look forward to working with you. I would like to make you aware that there have been some updates to the Parent-Student Handbook, so please take the time to look over these documents.  The biggest changes in the handbook are in regards to the new cell phone policy, as well as the Chromebook policy. Students and their guardians must verify that they have read the handbook and will abide by its terms. Please return verification forms to the office at your earliest convenience. Students returning all “first-day” and “mailed-home” paperwork by the end of today will be entered into a raffle where they can win FREE donuts for their entire homeroom!

     

    Once again we will be using the Aeries portal to communicate your student’s progress with you for academics, attendance, and discipline. Although it is our intention to communicate with you in person or over the phone as soon as an issue arises, the best way to stay up-to-date on your student’s progress is through this portal. We encourage you and your student to view progress on a weekly basis. As a school we do our best to keep information up-to-date on a weekly basis, so please be patient. Please note that if a student turns in late work, it may take a couple of weeks for the system to reflect this update. We also encourage you to provide your email address to your student’s teachers and the office, as well as updated contact information so that we may communicate with you regularly. Information on accessing your student’s portal is enclosed in this packet. If you are looking for up-to-date information about school happenings, please make sure to visit our website http://fms-fesd-ca.schoolloop.com/ or “Like” the Fortuna Middle School page on Facebook. While I will be sending home monthly newsletters with your student, I realize that they don’t always make it home. If that happens, you can always access the monthly “From the Principal’s Desk” on our website.

     

    If you are a parent/guardian of an 8th grade student, you probably know that we’ve already begun fundraising for your child’s trip/activity and graduation. Thank you to everyone who has already helped! We ask that everyone do their “fair share” by participating in fundraisers/ volunteering so that we can give students an amazing experience. Students must participate in at least three fundraising opportunities during the school year. It is our goal this year to earn enough funds to take eligible students on a three-day trip educational trip to the San Francisco (and surrounding) area. Students earn this trip by demonstrating they are safe, responsible, respectful, and problem solvers. Specific student eligibility information for both graduation and the trip is located in your student’s handbook, so please make sure to look over this carefully with your student. We are currently looking for 8th grade students and their parents/guardians to help sell food at our next fundraiser during Back to School Night on September 5. Please email Mrs. Johansen at jjohansen@fortunaesd.com if you can help. Our next 8th grade parent-committee meeting is Tuesday, September 25, 2018 at 6pm in the FMS cafeteria. We will be discussing upcoming fundraisers, graduation, and the trip, so please attend. If you have Facebook, please ask to join the FMS Class of 2019 page. No students are allowed on this page, as we try and keep some parts of the trip and graduation a surprise.

    September 7-PTO Fundraiser-FMS 5th-8th Grade Dance ($5pp) Concessions sold at event.

    September 10-PTO Meeting (4pm at SFES Library)

    September 13- Cookie Dough Fundraiser Begins

    September 14-Scotia Band Assembly; Play 60 “Back to Football Friday” event

    September 17-21-Constitution Week

    September 25-8th Grade Parent Committee Meeting 6pm in the FMS cafeteria

    September 28-Student Appreciation Day for eligible students; Monthly Award’s Assembly

     

    Enclosed with this newsletter is a flyer telling you how you can help our school earn FREE books for our school library. Through September 29, 2018, or school office will be collecting receipts that show purchases of participating Kellogg’s product purchases. Please send your receipts with the Kellogg purchase highlighted to the FMS so that we can upload it for a free book (see flyer for more information).

     

    As always, I’d like to take this opportunity to remind you how important it is for your child to attend school every day. If your child is sick or has an appointment that cannot be scheduled outside of the regular school day, please make sure you call the office at 707 725-3415, text 707-297-9561, or send a note to school the next day. This is for your child’s safety. If your family plans a trip/vacation during the school year, we ask that you try to do so over our scheduled breaks. If that is not possible, please make sure to call the office and email your student’s teachers as soon as possible. You must request an Independent Study in the FMS office well before your student leaves if you want him/her to receive the work. Please remember that an Independent Study can only be given for a minimum of 5 days, and that the request must be signed by both parent and student ahead of time. If your student does not turn in completed work when he/she returns, he/she will not receive attendance credit and will lose valuable points.

     

    I hope to see you at our Back to School Night and FREE Ice Cream Social on September 5, 2017 from 5:30-6:30pm. The 8th Grade FMS Parent Committee will be selling pizza by the slice for $2 and soda/water for $1 for anyone interested. Here’s to a great year at Fortuna Middle School!

    Athletic Physical Forms

    All FMS athletes must have an updated physical form on file each school year. Students will not be allowed to try-out or participate in school sports until he/she has a form on file in the office and a signed athletic handbook form.
